Empirical Equations for the Direct Definition of Stress–Strain Laws for Fiber-Section-Based Macromodeling of Infilled Frames

2018

Equivalent strut macromodels are largely used to model the influence of infill walls in frame structures due to their simplicity and effectiveness from a computational point of view. Despite these advantages, which are fundamental to carrying out seismic simulation of complex structures, equivalent struts are phenomenological models and therefore have to conventionally account for the influence of really large amounts of geometrical and mechanical variables with a relatively simple inelastic response. Mechanical approaches, generally used to evaluate the force-displacement curve of a strut, are based on hypothesizing the damage mechanism that will occur for an infill-frame system subject to…

Deformation and failure of MXene nanosheets

2020

This work is aimed at the development of finite element models and prediction of the mechanical behavior of MXene nanosheets. Using LS-Dyna Explicit software, a finite element model was designed to simulate the nanoindentation process of a two-dimensional MXene Ti3C2Tz monolayer flake and to validate the material model. For the evaluation of the adhesive strength of the free-standing Ti3C2Tz-based film, the model comprised single-layered MXene nanosheets with a specific number of individual flakes, and the reverse engineering method with a curve fitting approach was used. The interlaminar shear strength, in-plane stiffness, and shear energy release rate of MXene film were predicted using th…

Compressive response of concrete columns under service conditions strengthened by confining devices: from the local to the global behavior.

COMPRESSIVE BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE COLUMNS AXIALLYLOADED BEFORE CFRP-WRAPPING. REMARKS BY EXPERIMENTALNUMERICAL INVESTIGATION

2018

Strengthening of existing concrete columns with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) results generally in a satisfactory structural member improvement in terms of load and strain capacity. A reliable prediction of the capacity obtained by these reinforcement strategies requests a proper knowledge of the load-strain response of the confined concrete elements. However, so far, the available design methods and technical codes do not consider the effect of the possible presence of service loads at the moment of application of the reinforcement, and therefore, the compressive behavior of the concrete confined under preload is still unclear. In this paper, the effect of sustained loads on the compress…

In Silico Finite Element Modeling of Stress Distribution in Osteosynthesis after Pertrochanteric Fractures

2022

A stabilization method of pertrochanteric femur fractures is a contentious issue. Here, we assess the feasibility of rapid in silico 2D finite element modeling (FEM) to predict the distribution of stresses arising during the two most often used stabilization methods: gamma nail fixation (GNF) and dynamic hip screw (DHS). The modeling was based on standard pre-surgery radiographs of hip joints of 15 patients with pertrochanteric fractures of type A1, A2, and A3 according to the AO/OTA classification. The FEM showed that the stresses were similar for both GNF and DHS, with the medians ranging between 53–60 MPa and consistently lower for A1 than A3 fractures. Stresses also appeared in the fixa…
